Bio Oil® |
 |
Introduction & Overview |
Bio-Oil® is a skin care oil that was developed to be used on the face and the body. It was specifically designed to ease scars, stretch marks, uneven skin tone, aging and dehydrated skin. However, it is now purported to alleviate the visible signs of facial aging. It has also gained a reputation for being able to alleviate dry, itchy and flaky skin, in order to restore skin health. Let’s take a look at this product in order to determine its potential ability to increase skin health and ease other skin issues, such as aging.
|
 | What it is |
Bio-Oil® is a compilation of extracts, antioxidants and oils, such as: Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Calendula Oil, Lavender Oil, Rosemary Oil and Chamomile Oil.

 | Product in Focus |
Let’s take a look at the elements used in Bio-Oil® and their possible viability as anti-aging agents. Vitamin E is talked about as being a superstar in the skin care arena, because it is thought to be a potent antioxidant when applied topically to skin. Vitamin E is actually a major naturally occurring lipid-soluble antioxidant, which may be valuable in protecting the skin from the adverse effects of oxidative stress, such as sun damage. However, when it comes to being used to ease scaring, there has been some controversy, because some experts believe it may actually make scaring worse.
Retinol is the animal form of Vitamin A, and it has become a heavy hitter in the anti-aging and skin care market. However, studies show it may not be as effective as Retinoic Acid, which is also known as Tretinoin, the ingredient in Renova and Retin-A - two prescription skin care elements. Some people confuse these elements, believing that by using Retinol, they are getting the same effects as using Retinoic Acid, which is not the case.
There have been some controversies regarding the use of Retinol in over the counter skin-care products, due to its tendency to be unstable when stored in the wrong packaging, and due to conflicting theories regarding its ability to be converted into Retinoic Acid after it is absorbed into the skin, to boost Collagen production.
Lavender Extract is familiar to many, because it is used in many fragrances, but it is thought to also have some antibacterial properties. Calendula Extract may have some antibacterial and antioxidant properties for skin, but this has not been confirmed by any research at this time. Finally, Rosemary Extract may deliver antioxidants into the skin, but it has also been shown to potentially cause skin irritation for some.

 | Website |
This website provides a lot of product related information. For instance, they fully disclose their formulary, which is great to see. They also discuss their use of PurCellin Oil™, which was created in the lab from the oil glands of ducks to increase hydration.
However, some people express concern about how this oil is derived, and frankly, we question its viability in hydrating the skin. There are actually some really effective elements available on the market, such as Hyaluronic Acid, which is actually known to be one of the most effective hydrators available.
|
 | Positives |
• Uses many antioxidants in their formulary
• Rather comprehensive website
|
 | Negatives |
• Does not use some of the more effective anti-aging elements
• Not available directly through developer

 | Final Thoughts |
Bio-Oil® uses a few elements that are said to have heavy-duty antioxidant properties, such as Vitamins A and E. However, it has been our experience that it is important to use a well balanced product when trying to restore skin health, and ease damaged and/or aging skin. In reality, we find skin needs a combination of ingredients to function optimally, and for this reason, some of the more effective and forward-thinking developers will use antioxidants in conjunction with elements that are know to restore skin structure, such as Real Collagen.
Real Collagen has been shown to be a powerful way to enable the skin to increase its own Collagen levels, in order to increase smoothness, softness and suppleness. Some oil-based products, such as Bio-Oil®, may work on a surface level, but they fail to penetrate deep into the skin’s layers. Some women may feel that its use of Vitamin A may increase Collagen levels, but this has not been shown to be as effective as using Real Collagen.
Finally, when shopping online, we believe it is important to find a developer or a retailer with a proven history of providing quality customer care. It has been our experience that some developers make it difficult for individuals to return products they have purchased online. However, shopping online is extremely convenient, and we feel people should not be put off by this. In fact, there are developers who have created effective products, who have a track record of providing hassle-free and quick returns, as well as providing friendly and accessible customer care.
