Frownies are marketed as “Hollywood’s beauty secret”, since all of the company’s products are formulated to combat the visible signs of aging. The home page posts celebrity endorsements and links to publications that have mentioned the products, as well as several health and beauty tips.
According to the website, the product’s formula was first invented in 1889 by a woman named Margaret Kroesen who saw a need to reduce the frown lines that had formed on her daughter’s face. She soon entered the business world and began marketing the product to the general public. Today, her granddaughter Margaret Wright oversees the company, and Ms. Wright’s daughter-in-law is the CEO. We will take a closer look at the company and its current product line below.

The product that made the company famous is the Frownies Facial Pads, a product that is intended to eliminate deep expression lines during sleep. Other products include the Immune Perfect Wrinkle Cream to eliminate fine lines around the eyes and firm the skin on the face and neck; the Immune Shield Serum to eliminate fine lines around the mouth; and the Balancing Face Wash to exfoliate and detoxify the skin.
Since the Frownies Facial Pads have been around for so long, we thought we would take a closer look at this product to see exactly how it is meant to work.

According to the website, the facial pads are made from “natural, skin-friendly materials” and are simply applied to the forehead, corners of the eyes and corners of the mouth to help relax the muscles and help them “assume their natural appearance.” Supposedly, the Frownies allow deep expression lines to heal.
The website posts a few testimonials, complete with before and after photographs, and claims that significant results were noticed after using the facial pads every night for three weeks. The theory is that Frownies form a splint that holds the visible layer of the skin flat overnight, and the skin cells “reposition themselves” while the body is at rest.
No additional ingredients are applied to the skin to enable it to heal or repair; the ingredients listed are said to be unbleached, natural Kraft paper with water-soluble dry gum adhesive. A box containing 144 facial pads costs about $20.

The Frownies website posts a detailed history of the company, as well as a biography of the current CEO. We like this type of information, because it gives us a better idea of what the company stands for, and in this case, we feel that the company cares more about their customers than others may.
While we appreciate the details given about how to use the products, and the fact that all product ingredients are listed, we are very disappointed that no research is posted at this time. We assume that some clinical trials must have been done at some point over the past 115 years or so, and would like to see more supportive evidence that this method will actually be effective.

Still, we are disappointed not to see any research posted on the website, and feel that use of the facial pads alone may not be enough to combat all signs of aging.
