Neutrogena |
 |
Introduction & Overview |
Neutrogena is a well-known line of skincare products that include anti-aging remedies, cleansers, acne products and more. This company claims to enable consumers to “get clean, clear, healthy-looking skin.” The products address the various factors in skincare, including environmental damage.
Although this company seems to enjoy a rather solid reputation as a major skincare product manufacturer, we nevertheless have some doubts regarding some of their products overall quality. We have encountered some consumer complaints apparently filed against this company, in which “deceitful” advertising and inadequate results were alleged. We will evaluate this popular line of products for its potential benefit to the consumer.

 | Products at a Glance |
Neutrogena markets shampoos, moisturizers, toners, cleansers, anti-aging remedies and more. The company also sells sun-protection products, cosmetics, and body care products. Neutrogena’s product line includes items for both men and women. The company’s anti-aging products seem to focus primarily on antioxidants. Neutrogena also sells special “microdermabrasion” kits for home use, as well as eye creams, hand creams and more.

 | Products in Focus |
For this review, we will focus on one particular product, the Anti-Oxidant Age Reverse. This product claims to be “your skin’s biggest ally when it comes to battling the elements.” This anti-aging product is said to contain “a triple antioxidant blend that neutralizes 99% of free radicals.” We were surprised to discover that this anti-aging product seems not to include some of the most potent age-reversing ingredients available, such as Argireline and Hyaluronic Acid. These components are said to restore youthful moisture and smooth facial wrinkles. We are concerned, in fact, with some of the ingredients utilized in this product.
The ingredient Gamma Tocopherol has reportedly been linked to potential adverse effects. One recent study reported “Alpha Tocopherol metabolite protects brain cells in vitro, while the Gamma Tocopherol metabolite seems to damage brain cells in vitro.” Certain types of Tocopherol have also been said to potentially cause allergic reactions.

 | Website |
This company’s Website is informative and well designed. However, we were disappointed by the lack of consumer testimonials for this line of products. We believe that honest consumer feedback can be very valuable to those considering a particular product. Unfortunately, we encountered an entire Website devoted to unfavorable consumer feedback regarding Neutrogena products.
One consumer reports, “Their Visibly Firm Face Lotion has caused deep wrinkles around my mouth. I have tried everything to reverse this condition. Nothing has helped.” Another discussed an unfortunate result from a Neutrogena cleansing product: “I used it for 3 days and my face broke out in pimples. I'm 36 years old; I don't get pimples anymore! I stopped using the product and went back to my previous regime- my skin cleared up in about a week.” Of course individual opinions will vary.
|
 | Positives |
• Sells a wide variety of products
• Claims to be recommended by dermatologists
|
 | Negatives |
• Gamma Tocopherol may be associated with adverse effects for some
• Consumers have complained of wrinkles caused by anti-aging products
• Website does not include consumer testimonials
• Consumers have reported acne breakouts from cleansing products
|
 | Final Thoughts |
It is our opinion that despite this company’s popularity in the skincare industry, there is a fraction of customers who seem greatly dissatisfied with the results of these products. We feel that this negative feedback, combined with an apparent lack of consumer testimonials, is a cause for concern.
We believe that there are currently less “renowned” skincare products whose manufacturers work tirelessly to satisfy consumers. These products contain advanced skincare ingredients, such as Argireline and Hyaluronic Acid, and are often commended through positive consumer reviews.
